Sebastion Loeb would have to be the best all time driver and able to keep the other drivers at bay and his car in one piece.

Loeb is the best by far, he's broken like every record, he drives fast but carefully and he gives good show. Go Loeb!

Maybe, I think his best is still to come.

Events in recent times I think have suited him, they are relatively short competitively with repeat stages... I've read he has an almost photographic memory.

Indeed Loeb is the best but my personal favorite I'd have to admit is Chris Atkinson (GO ATTIE!). I admire his style of driving and personality.

I don't think you can compare, I think Loeb is definitely @1 and the current events suit him. The events are only about 350ks in competitive length.

Formerly events were about 500ks and longer with some stages running throughout the night. I have heard stories of co-drivers sleeping during the night stages so that they drive in the mornings and the driver is able to sleep and be fresh for the final push during the afternoon stages.

So you are talking completely different eras one where it was not so important to be fastest on every stage to win, it was more about lasting the distance, to now they have to pretty much drive flat out all the time, I would say being able to remember the stages helps dramatically.

So how would Loeb perform where driver fatigue and greater mechanical preservation were major factors?? who knows??

That said: It is much easier to be driving at 100% all the time because your concentration is up, if you have to drive slower to preserve the car or you are fatigued it is much easier to make mistakes.

Best is Sébastien Loeb

But don't forget that Mäkkinen, Grönholm, Burns, Solberg and Sainz.

Best WRC year was 2004 incredible 3 drivers in each team. When Citroën won with Loeb, Sainz and McRae. Vive la France, Loeb et Citroën.

My personal favorite is Colin McRae because I grew up watching him and thought he was extremely tallented. The new cars suit Loeb, however, as good as he is, and he is good I don't think he can hold a candel to some of the drivers of the past such as Biasson, Henri Toivenen, Michelle Mutton, Marku Allen, and several of the group b and before drivers.

Not to mention that it was during those years that most every rally had tons of night stages and they drove no matter what the weather was like, rain, snow, sleet, mud (I remember one rally recently being cancled b/c of too much mud. How come nobody has mentioned Tommi Makkinen?

Ya all, I know its hard to compare drivers from different era's and so on, but in terms of championship records, then Loeb is top.
Watch him testing on youtube in monte carlo and you will see what dedication he has to his sport, his fitness etc. and he is untouchable when on form. Yes he does make mistakes so he is human.
Wrc is looking good for 2010 and Alsace rally is the one to see next year,
also with Ken Block making appearances this should add to the excitement and put rallying on top of the motorsport tree where it belongs.
Loeb to be champ yet again, dont back anyone else!

Thats definitely a possibility as I spoke to some locals when I was in Finland this year, and they told me was driving rally cars as a kid and is totally familiar with rallying. I assumed it was just a gimmick, but not so. However he is hardly likely to give up a top F1 spot just now, and drop a hefty lot in salary payment. Mabye in a few years as you suggest, especially as both F1 and WRC are both going thru a change phase right now. The best WRC news is Ken Block for 2010 as he is well known the world over because of x-games etc., but is he in that class?...I dont think so but he will bring a new dimension to rallying...bring it on oh and dont forget Chris Meek??? Another story!

Tommy Makkinen (great driver btw), has 4 (in a row)
and LOEB has 6 (in a row) the last six, 2004-2009.................
even better I think!
Counting 6 = 4 does not work somehow!
You related to KIMI by any chance?

Best new-age driver:
Leob

Best Man-Machine combination:
Tommy Makkinen (he and Mitsubishi just clicked!)

Most seasoned:
Carlos Sainz.. chugging chugging along always a threat up to 2005 at age of 43. now hes into other form of rallying!

Best old-time driver... no idea... cos i started at the Tommi Era!

Loeb is the most recent greatest driver beating all world records, but overall it has to be Colin McRae RIP. He may not have won the championship many times but my god his heart was init...

But how can forget Richard Burns….he wasn’t far behind with the love for the sport.
