Hirvonen drives with a describing system
Oikee=Right
Vasen=Left
Nopee=Fast
Täys=Flat
Eri=Medium
Serpo Takavisto=Hairpin (Takavisto means "back". Therefore this is a tighter hairpin )
Tosi Hidas=Really slow
Hidas= Slow
serpo=round hairpin, in french lacet
risteys=junction
kaks -- two -- 20 meters

Hirvonen also has some special notes, for example "mene" which translates to "go". It has the same meaning as "plus" (+), so the corner is bit faster than without the "go" note. Another one is "käännä" which translates to "turn!". This note tells Mikko that he can throw the car into the corner more aggressively than normally.
JM Latvala and Miikka Anttila use a numeric note system. Actually numeric pacenotes are rare among Finnish drivers. Latvala and Anttila use a scale from one to nine (1-9) where one means that the corner is totally flat out and nine is a very tight hairpin. All kinds of basic additional notes (e.g tightens and narrows) are pretty much the same with other Finnish drivers.
Hirvonen wants his notes to be delivered rather aggressively as you might have noticed from the onboards, whereas Latvala's notes are read much more smoothly and he likes them to be repeated few times.
Could someone clarify what kind of notes Loeb uses? I've been trying to determine their system for ages but I just don't get it. Do they really use a system which tells Seb the angle or degree of the corner? What about the distances then?
It would be interesting to hear more info about pacenotes in different languages... Sordo/Marti in Spanish...Duval/Pivato in French?

Hey, great stuff :D I always wondered what those "add-ons" meant, but now i know :D
I know that Loeb drives with a very special system, and I think he uses a scale from 1-10. Maybe he combinates this with a describing system as well. They may use the numeric system so that it tell the corner degree (1 is 10°, 2 is 20° and 9 is 90°)
I will soon post the swedish pace notes from PG Andersson if anyone wants :D

Anyone have a descripton of english notes? I want to learn how to write pacenotes and see how the pros do it.

when you're writing pace notes you describe the road. How fast you can enter the corner, how severe the corner is and how it looks. You can use a describing system, or a number system. The describing system is like the on Matthew Wilson drives with, and a number system is like Colin McRae and Petter Solberg has.
In the recce the driver and the co-driver will drive the stage in 70-90 km/h and the driver tells the co-driver how he want to have the note. They looking for stones etc anything dangerous. Then the drive the stage one more time and the co-driver reads out the pace notes and the driver can make som corrections.
When Colin McRae drove, he used a number system 1-6 to describe the corners. This numbers told in wich gear he had to enter the corner. Then he have som add-ons like cut, don't cut, plus, minus, slippery, care, caution and so on. There is actually no limits in what you can put in your pace notes, but you have to consider the information the driver have to take in.

Amazing how these drivers can put them into a queue and take them out the other side while driving.
Shame there aren't any good drivers atm which use English so I can follow them (Solberg-Mills were too fast anyway).
A few months ago I found a picture on the net of around 20 different types of corner in the "Finnish pace note system", but I can't find it now.
In this video of Latvala's Argentina 2008 crash, Anttila seems to say what sounds like "good boobs" before they go off - what does this mean? I guess it's something like "oh shit".

Anttila says "nyppy yks" which translates to "crest one". So there is a full speed crest coming ahead. Too bad they didn't make it to there but went out of the road.
Sometimes I'm surprised how the codrivers continue reading the pacenotes even if the car is in a uncontrollable slide etc. This Märtin/Park (rip) clip is a prime example of it. Gotta love how Beef just keeps his head down and continues reading the notes. http://www.youtube.com/wat ch?v=5hIOrpeYyxc

"Sido" doesn't really have any good translation. But basically it means that the driver has to use the brakes (simultaneously with the throttle) to stop the car from jumping too much.

I think I know what "situar", "tim" and "tom" are.
"Situar" is the same as "line" for Colin Mc Rae (RIP) and Petter Solberg. It means that Dani should keep a way of the road to have the best position for the next corner. For example, "izquierda 4 lenta situar, derecha 3, 50.....", it means that Dani should keep the inner line when he gets off from izquierda 4 lenta to have the best position for derecha 3 and go through it with the best trajectory and gaining some 1/10" with that little thing.
Regarding "tim" and "tom", I think they represent some bumps in the road, tim is for a little bump where the car makes a tim (jeje), and tom is for bigger bumps, like humps in the road.
Please, correct me if you think I'm wrong, I think they mean that.

Here I have some Petter Solberg's Notes.
It's the same as Dani Sordo but Petter has numbers from 1 to 6. It sometimes respects the gearbox, 1 for 1st gear and the
same till 6 for 6th gear. But it depends on the rally, it's not always like that.
"Flat" is a flat out bend, then goes "6", "5", "4", "3", "2" and "1".
Tighter than a "1" is a "hairpin"
So you have the 6 numbers or "hairpin" plus left or right.
Some extras about bends are:
Tightens= the bend tightens (sometimes Phil says "tightens 2" or "tightens 3", it depends how much the bend tightens).
Opens= bend opens.
Long= it's a long bend which continues with the same number.
Extra long= extra long bend with the same number all the bend long.
Extra extra long= extra extra long bend with the same number all the bend long.
Short= it's a very small bend.
Cut= can cut the bend through the inner line.
- (minus)= eg.: "3 right minus....", it's a little more tightened than a "3" but it's opener than a "2".
+ (plus)= the same as minus, but the opposite.
slow= I'm not really sure about this one (¿?).
Some extras about position in the road are=

Big jump= car will flight a lot (I love these!!!)
Slippery= the road or bend are gonna be slippery for adherence.
Maybe= it's a maybe option, eg.: "jump maybe...", car will maybe jump... or maybe not.
Slow line= ? (I've no idea)
early= ? (I've no idea)

I got the pace note from the entire stage :D
By SLOW Petter means that he approaches a narrower section (corner), and by LINE he means the racing line.. In a right corner you should be on the left side ahead of the corner, then cut it half way trough, and then end up at the left side again after the corner.. This racing line makes you go even faster trough the corners. As you say, keep in for the next bend but that depends on what type of bend it is ;) Right or left.. hehe
By early he means that the corner or whatever he approaches occurs faster that you might expect.. He also have LATE wich is the opposite.
SLOW LINE is a merging (?) with the two notes SLOW and LINE

I should also add a correction on the corners that petter uses.. 1 is not a hairpin, becuase he also have the note Hairpin, but it's a very tight and severe corner, close to a hairpin!
