Ok, back to who am I and what it has to do with fitness marketing. To answer that question, let me tell you about my start in fitness period.

————————————————————

Like a lot of trainers, my start in fitness was almost completely by accident. I was burnt out from empty “rough and tumble” high-school years, and still more years as a flat-broke college student with nothing more then text-books and television as his daily activities – no friends, no money, and no social life, whatsoever.

Then, on a total whim, I took up training as a side job for some quick and easy money. Now it didn’t turn out to be quick or easy, but I did make a discovery that changed my life: I realized you could make money from fitness, and this began the first act of my fitness career.

Being in personal training turned out to be a natural fit to me. Staying in shape and learning about fitness were easy and came second nature, but was a total mystery to all of my clients. This created the gap in knowledge and skill that allowed me to be a true expert. Training also happens to be a very high paying service – although in health-club settings, most of this money goes to the gym.

That’s when I decided to strike out and start my own training business. At this point I couldn’t concentrate on my boring college classes any more, and my grades started to go down to the point where my only option was to leave (I later returned to finish up my degree in Biology).

My training business, GoHard Personal Training was launched – and after more than a year of making every possible mistake in the book, it reached a level of what is considered success by all traditional, “small business as usual” standards. I was making over 100K, had a group of employees, and a steady a flow of clients coming in the door.

Through GoHard, I achieved a lot of my initial income and lifestyle goals, with the friends, activities, and possessions that I had always dreamed of. For that, I’ll forever be grateful to Personal Training for what it’s helped me achieve – that is, a sense of control over my life that I think only a tiny number of people are ever able to feel.

Even though things were going well for me, I started to face the overwork and pressure that’s typical of small business and, especially, of personal training. The writing was on the wall – I’d have to find a new way to do things, because the current game plan wasn’t going to last for long.

What’s funny is I’d always felt I had a knack for the marketing side of the business, and it was actually the part I enjoyed the most – even more than the fitness side. Although I never used the web to market up to that point, for every other form of marketing I did, I had a lot of fun creating the campaigns and watching the results and responses they got.

Then one day, almost by accident, I was introduced by Ryan Lee (now a good friend) to the world of online fitness marketing, and things were never the same again. He showed me an entirely new way that clients were being reached and fitness was being sold and consumed in the world today.

I first used online fitness marketing to grow a new type of training business with only a small group of high paying clients. Using the internet to market myself allowed me to be selective and gave me power to take on only the clients I wanted to train and cut away the rest. My small client list consisted of investment bankers, Fortune 500 execs, actors, and a television personality to name a few.

This welcomed a totally new phase of my training career full of brand new experiences. I had a work schedule that was under my control, I was able take frequent vacations, and hang out on the boats and beach homes of my clients. I was again happy with my training business, and had the time to pursue other options.

Around this time, I applied what I learned about the web from my training business and started my blog, Super-Trainer. It was a blog all about Top-Level Training, a term I created, describing high-level training without burnout.

The blog also allowed me to do the networking that was missing from my early years in training. My view of fitness started to open up and expand. As I talked to and shared knowledge with many of the world’s top trainers, my perspective really opened up on what’s was going on in it the training industry, and what’s possible in fitness.

With the blog obviously being online, I also came in contact with many of the top online fitness entrepreneurs, and my firsthand education in the world of fitness marketing began. These relationships with fitness marketers helped me release my first product for Personal Trainers, a manual about Top-Level Training that sold hundreds of copies with zero returns. I later expanded it into a course which became the most highly promoted product in the history of the training industry. The promotion of the program was a result of the relationships I had built, but the income it brought in was due to the talented group of fitness marketers I had assembled, who are now the Super-Trainer team.

In the process, many of the top trainers I had come to know began to pursue me for help with their marketing. Me and my team have now become the most sought after marketing consultants in the fitness industry, and Super-Trainer has become the top resource for trainers to learn about how to take their training businesses online. We now travel the world learning and bringing massive results to our clients and testing techniques and strategies for all of our clients that look to Super-Trainer as their primary source of cutting edge fitness marketing information.
